Hi Birders,
Today (5 July, 8:15 AM.) I saw a VA Rail at Huntley in the same place one was
reported earlier in the week.
Four mallards were feeding about 10 feet from the boardwalk in the inner
loop. I saw something moving beyond them. A couple walking about 20 feet in
front of me walked by the birds. When I got pass the mallards, I saw the rail.
I
stopped and the rail immediately moved into the vegetation. The bird was the
size of a VA and the proportions were also correct. The bird appeared dark
brown with spotting and streaking on the underparts; it had very strong rail
marks on the flanks. I was not able to find it again.
The group from the Wildbird Center on Duke Street pointed out a Barred Owl
sitting on a snag along the tree line near the woods before the tower.
The bufflehead was still there.
