VA Birders,

    I enjoyed a pleasant morning at Fort C.F. Smith Park in Arlington County 
on Saturday morning.  I saw 35 species between 9:00 am and 11:45 am.  The 
most surprising bird was an adult Broad-winged Hawk, which flew over at 11:30 
am.  The bird was fairly low, so that I could see plainly the broad black and 
white tail bands.  We had 22 Broad-wings fly over the park in April, during 
spring migration, but I am not aware of any Broad-wings summering in 
Arlington, or anywhere nearby.  So, a question for the raptor specialists and 
hawk watchers out there:  Was this bird likely to be part of a post-breeding 
dispersal (if hawks do that) or a very early migrant?  

    Other highlights of the morning were 3 Great Crested Flycatchers and a 
Baltimore Oriole.
