went out to this spot this morning [70 miles from the beltway, but a
wonderful field, with lots of thistle plus other flowers, and one area
thick with sumac & ash]. parked along Rt. 15 & immediately heard a song
that seemed to fit the book description. my life Dickcissel was singing
from a phone line. spent an hour & a half walking the gravel road
[Spring Creek Rd] or into the thickets. good birding and just a
beautiful field -- take a camera [had I but taken mine, I'd have
wonderful pictures of a dickcissel singing, he was 30 feet away, easy
telephoto shot]

bobwhite [started calling about 8:30 but wouldn't give his last name
until 9:30]
tree swallow
barn swallow
purple martin
phoebe
eastern wood-pewee
carolina wren
tufted titmouse
hermit thrush [rust emphatically on the south end]
mockingbirds
blue jay
common yellowthroat
yellow-breasted chat [just 1, silent]
dickcissel -- 3 males, one juv male [his black throat patch was like my
son's beard at 17] & 1
         female
indigo bunting 3 males
blue bunting 1 male
field sparrow
song sparrow
cardinal
American goldfinch -- by the pound
red-wing blackbirds [small pond/marsh couple hundred yards down on north
side of
Spring Creek Rd. -- rest of birding was on south side of road
orchard oriole 2 males, 3 females
    jck
