Greetings Birders,
We had a very interesting visit to Sunrise Valley Park in Reston, VA this
morning.
The highlight was seeing five Green herons. We could not tell if some of these
were a family unit. Also, the five member Killdeer family is still there and so
is the Willow Flycatcher. The hot weather is shrinking the pond, and that has
left some good mud flats for the Killdeer.
A Kingfisher, young Barnswallows being fed by their parents, a family of Tree
swallows, Eastern Kingbird, Phoebes, and a female Hairy Woodpecker were other
highlights of the morning.
A very emaciated Red Fox looks like it could soon be a casualty of the
reduction of the overall habitat caused by the building of two office buildings
and their parking garages. (The office buildings will probably sit empty as
casualties of the commercial slump in the Dulles/Herndon/Reston corridor.)
