Isn't it amazing how soon in the Summer that some birds start heading
south? A Brown Thrasher bouncing through our garden yesterday was another
such bird.

July is the start of real hummer activity in our garden. We are eagerly
awaiting the arrival of juvie hums and more adult males as they head
south. Be on the lookout at humfeeders and humplants near you!

Speaking of humplants, several folks have shown interest in seeing my wild
and crazy critter garden. I've been thinking of having an open garden day,
but can't pin down a day to do it. So, if anyone would like to come by
sometime, let me know when you'd like to come and I'll see if I will be
here to show you around. The garden starts getting "good" at the end of
July or so, so I'd recommend waiting until at least then. And the hummers
should be better then too!

One more wildlife gardening note to mention. In yesterday's mail I
received my registeration form for the Irvine Nature Center's (Stevenson,
MD) excellent annual Native Plant Seminar. This year it will be held on
August 24 and one of the featured speakers will be Craig Tufts of the
National Wildlife Federation's Backyard Habitat Program. I've heard Craig
speak in the past, and he is excellent. So if you are interested in the
topic of wildlife gardening, I highly recommend going to the seminar. Some
top notch native plant vendors will also be there, so it's a great
opportunity for beginner and veteran wildlife gardener alike.

I checked Irvine's website <www.explorenature.org> and unfortunately they
don't have a specific link for info about the seminar, but you can find it
by doing a search on their events calendar page for the month of
August. Or, give them a call at 410-484-2413.

Enjoy!
