VA BIRDers.
Jon Little and I met Tom Bjorkman at the Blue Ridge Educational Center this
morning and birded the southern portions of the property starting at about
0645. This area consists of field complexes, small streams with dense bushy
thickets and young trees adjacent, and mature woods in stream valleys and
hillsides. Although we could not relocate the Alder Flycatcher reported a
couple of weeks ago, we did confirm Cerulean Warbler as a breeder by
observing an FL male somewhat hidden in dense brush while his mother
attempted to distract us and made alarm call notes. Species diversity was
similar to previous reports. We ended at about 1000. The list below
includes a few birds seen in the area as we drove the backroads to different
locations.
Afterwards, Jon and I visited a few locations in Loudoun Co with Bobolink and
a couple of Red-headed Woodpeckers and Willow Flycatchers noted. We could
not relocate the Loggerhead Shrike family on Foggy Bottom Rd. The field with
the Bobolinks on Ebenzer Church Rd (different from Jon's recent report) was
mowed and did not have these birds, either. Admittedly, it was a bit warm at
this point (noon).
