Today I birded with Tina Trice, Mike Iwanik, Vickie Gullet and Arun
Bose. We met at Shirley Plantation in Charles City County where we had
looks at several WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS mixed in with SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS and SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS. Also at Shirley were a pair of
DICKCISSELS. The male was singing and the female was seen carrying food
into cover.
As reported by Wendy Ealding, the Black-bellied Whistling Ducks were a
no show in Suffolk today. The owner took down our cell phone numbers in
case they showed up but we never heard from her.
We then took a ride over to Southampton County where we had wonderful
looks at a perched MISSISSIPPI KITE on route 701. A BROAD-WINGED HAWK
was seen soaring on route 703. Over at the Bellyache Swamp on route
661, one male ANHINGA was in view and sunning on a low perch. This bird
was in a heavy molt and was missing quite a few flight feathers.
Despite dipping on the ducks, it was another great day to be out. Good
birding.
