Between 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. today, June 7, two adult Mississippi
Kites put on quite an aerial show at Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax
County. Without ever seeming to flap, the two birds (a pair?) moved
effortlessly around, alternating high and low, occasionally plunging
suddenly downwards. Among the watchers were several school
groups. Not one of the abbreviated field guides the students and
teachers had with them showed Mississippi Kite! I explained to them
that until recent years this species was rarely seen north of the Carolinas.
Some of the best views of this species I have ever had.
Awesome.
