Birders,
This weekend's bird walk at Mason Neck State Park began with some feelings
of trepidation. The weather was windy with rain threatening, and I wondered
if the birds would all be smarter than us and have taken shelter. While the
noise of the wind in the leaves surely drowned out some of the birdsongs,
several decent species were still heard and/or seen, including a BALTIMORE
ORIOLE that appeared to be prying bugs out of some pine cones, and a
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER singing nicely atop a dead snag near the side of the
trail. The rain never precipitated either. Full list follows.
Please note that the next bird walk at MNSP will be Saturday, June 17 at
9am. As usual, we will meet at the Visitor Center for a 9am start, and
conclude in the picnic area at 11.
**There are other special events going on in the park on the 17th that you
should know about if you want to come to the bird walk. First off is the
Virginia State Park's 70th anniversary celebration, in recognition of which
the normal $4/car parking fee is reduced instead to a 10 cents/person
admission fee. Yes, that's not a typo! Then starting at 11 am, the Lions
Club is hosting a bluegrass festival. There is an additional fee to enter
the area of the festival, but you may still use the park trails without
paying that fee. Please note that because of the bluegrass festival, you
will be parking in the picnic area instead of near the Visitor Center.
Questions may be addressed to me at the contact address below.**
