Thanks Ned Brinkley for an informative and thoughtful post. While it is easy
to understand that many birders are frustrated and unhappy with the compromise,
it makes little sense to speak of birders as being co-opted and issuing idle
threats. The reality is, as Ned explains, that we have no power and no
leverage in this situation. So any access we can get is a plus. The best we
can do at this point is to show how cooperative we are, and work over time to
get the restrictions loosened as much as possible. Certainly threats are not
going to help.
Although we as birders see ourselves as no threat, the point is that the CBBT
has been identified as a potential target, and the authorities are naturally
taking steps to tighten security. It is not surprising that they would want to
restrict the ability of people to wander freely. It may be that birders have
done no harm, but how can they tell that everyone who identifies himself or
herself as a birder in the future is one indeed. Possibly they have
overreacted, but the best approach is to show them, ot to try to threaten them.
