Today we recaptured a female Hairy Woodpecker at one of the
Mason Neck MAPS banding stations. She was originally banded on
June 6, 1995 at the same station and was caught in a net only
a couple of hundred feet from the original net. She was aged as
an after hatch year bird, which means she is at least 11 years
old, and maybe older. She was in excellent shape and had a brood
patch so she is still raising those babies. That sets a record
for the oldest recovery at the Mason Neck MAPS stations. Our
oldest migrant was a 6yr old Acadian Flycatcher.
