Birders,
Neale Smith, Gerry Weinberger and I spent the weekend in Highland County and
had a
great bunch of birds. Sorry for the late posting. We ended up with 90+
species, the
most interesting of which follow:
Bald Eagle family - on Rte 84, south of Monterey
Turkey - 2, one on 84, one on Allegheny Rd
YB Cuckoo - several; best looks at one at interection of Rts 642 & 220
Traill's Flycatcher - Hidden Valley, Bath County - only bird of note here
Least Flycatcher - all over Rte 84 and the road to Paddy Knob (FR 55
Cliff Swallow - Rte 84
RB Nuthatch - Locust Springs
GC Kinglet - Locust Springs
GW Warbler - Rte 631, off Rt250 east of Monterey
Mourning Warbler - Paddy's Knob
Vesper Sparrow - Rte 601
Other warblers seen/heard: N. Parula, Yellow, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia, BT
Blue, Yellow-
rumped, BT Green, Blackpoll*, Black-and-white, A. Redstart, Ovenbird and
Common
Yellowthroat.
Truly a fine weekend; the new restaurant in Monterey (Stone Hearth) is a
delight. How
did we ever do without it?
Bev Leeuwenburg
* John Spahr: this was obviously a late migrant on FR 55.
