Hello all

This morning Pat & I went out to the New Hope area to do one of the three Quail
& Rabbit runs for the DGIF . The start of the run begins at the intersection of
Rts. 608 & 865 . As we were traveling on Rt. 608 just past Rt. 776 we heard the
distinct singing of several Dickcissel's thru the thick fog . As we slowly
moved forward on Rt. 608 & just before getting to Rt. 775 we heard & saw
several more . In between Rts. 776 & 775 we had chalked up a total of 9 birds .
So we continued on to our starting point & in between Rt. 605 & the Bonnie Doon
Farm we heard & saw three more making a total of 12 birds . ANYONE who seeks
out the Dickcissel's please use care on Rt. 608 because there are no real good
places to pull off the road & the cars move fast . Some of the birds sing from
the power lines . While on the run we heard only one Quail & saw where a
couple of new homes were being built & we kept track of a few other birds that
we heard a good number of . After the run was over we headed out to the Swoope
area to check out Smith's Pond for any left over Shorebirds . The following
birds were recorded in the New Hope & Swoope areas .

Kingbird -- 18 new peak count
Horned Lark -- 3
Grasshopper Sparrow -- 20 --11 in New Hope & 9 in the Swoope area -- new peak
count
Vesper -- 2 one each in New Hope & swoope
Savannah -- 1 recently fledged young -- early breeding record
Blue Grosbeak -- 4 two each in the New Hope & Staunton (Rt. 662 ) area
Dickcissel -- 12 New Hope area -- new peak count
Orchard Oriole -- 15 -- 12 in the New Hope area & 3 in Swoope -- new peak count

Not a bad morning of bird watching .

Allen & Pat Larner
Staunton
