I took an Ornithology class up to the mountains this past Tuesday and
Wednesday were we saw a few interesting things. On Tuesday 5/31 in Bath
Co. we came across an American Woodcock crossing the road on Co Rd 600
in Gathright WMA west of Lake Moomaw, and at the lake at Bolar Flat we
saw one subadult and two adult Bald Eagles cruise by.

On Wednesday 6/1 in Highland Co. on our drive north on Rt 220, a little
south of Mustoe, we passed a small fish hatchery, and saw three subadult
Bald Eagles feeding. At Locust Springs we heard one Blackburnian
Warbler singing, and I think I heard a Purple Finch singing briefly,
both at the campground. It was pretty quiet otherwise, with
Black-throated Green, Black and White, and Chestnut-sided being the
other warblers encountered. At the Beaver Ponds we scared up a
Dark-eyed Junco off a nest with four eggs, and found a small recently
hatched duckling, presumably a Wood Duck, dead on the beaver dam.

Non bird sightings at Locust Springs included a patch of blooming Pink
Lady Slipper Orchid around the beaver pond, two very healthy sized
Spotted Salamanders under logs, one Slimy Salamander, lots of Red-backed
Salamanders and Red-spotted Newts, the later mating and with egg masses
present, and a few Spring Peepers.
