Believe it or not here in Newport News we apparently have a self-sustaining
population of Bobwhites in the downtown area adjacent to the railways yards.
I did the urban tree survey for the city a few years ago which took me along
the railway yards for a number of days. I would often see several coveys of
four to ten birds at a time.
Also in some of the older neighborhoods I consistently hear birds year
after year. I don't believe these are captive birds either as I hear
singing from different areas at once. A number of these older
neighborhoods have what amount to fairly large hedgerows along property
lines, I wonder if this has been enough cover for the quail to survive. My
own yard has a long but short and narrow (24"X24") boxwood hedge that spits
out new rabbits every few weeks. Spontaneous generation I guess! Who knows
maybe some Bobwhite populations have adapted to urbanization when conditions
are right.
By the way Ned that honeysuckle you are talking about is a noxious
non-native invasive alien, 'fraid you're gona hav'ta kill it! Just
kidding,
about killing it I mean.
