[va-bird] Re: Bobwhite in Arlington

To add to Paul Pisano's urban Northern Bobwhites - a male was calling in the
train yard in 'downtown' Cape Charles today, an odd location for one, just a
few feet off Mason Avenue, the business district. It's not an uncommon bird at
all in surrounding farm fields, but with the steady conversion of these to
golf courses and developments, the day will soon be here that this songster is
gone from the town.
I remember the last two sites in Norfolk that had them - the fields north of
Olney Road (now solid tracts of townhouses) through 1977 and the Norfolk &
Western Railway yards' margins, on the west side of West Ghent, through 1978,
twenty-six years ago. It's increasingly the same story through much of the
Tidewater - Portsmouth still has a few, northern Suffolk a few coveys left (of
the
abundance of quail there through the early 1980s), while Virginia Beach's
birds (as with Chesapeake and Suffolk) are more and more restricted to the
southern, more rural parts of the cities. Forgive this aside: I think the
people who
pave over rural areas with strip malls and box stores are the ones who have
never noticed a bobwhite and who no idea what honeysuckle smells like on a
summer evening, as they can't tolerate a green tangle of any kind.

<< The last bird I expected to add to my yard list in south Arlington was
Bobwhite, but when I took the trash out this morning (c.7:45am) I heard one
singing from a backyard a few houses down. It's certainly not going to
stick around to breed, but I understand it's not unusual for Bobwhites to
wander at this time of year. Surprisingly, it wasn't an Arlington bird
though, as a few years ago I saw one fly across Rt. 110 towards Arlington
Cemetery.
I live on S. 18th St., between Grant and Fern (Pentagon/Crystal City area).
I left for the day so I don't know if it's still around (not to mention that
it rained all day), but others may want to keep an ear out for it.
Good birding,
Paul Pisano
