[va-bird] College Creek Hawkwatch

The College Creek Hawkwatch, on the James River near Williamsburg, sponsored
by Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory, has wrapped up its 8th consecutive
late winter and spring season. It's the only regular spring hawkwatch in
Virginia.
Coverage was for 63 days and 97 hours, typically from about 10-noon (EST)
every day that weather permitted, from February 20-May 22. Special thanks to
volunteers Tom Armour and Bill Williams, who helped on 40 and 27 days
respectively.
The total of 1013 is the 4th highest, the number of days is the 2nd highest
and the number of hours is the 3rd highest. The birds per hour total of 10 is
a little below the average of 11.75.
Ospreys recorded a new season high, but most of the other species were well
off their usual totals, despite good coverage. Clearly, the 4 Mississippi Kites
on May 17th were the highlight. Mississippi Kites have been recorded during 4
of the 8 seasons.
Non-raptor highlights included no rarities this year, but some great flights
of Tree Swallows and Ring-billed Gulls. An adult Lesser Black-backed Gull was
seen there at least twice in late March.
If anyone wants more specifics from the complete report, please contact me
directly.
