[va-bird] Yellow-bellied sapsuckers

I have been very excited to observe the pre-nesting, nesting and feeding
behaviour of sapsuckers on our farm. The nest is located in a
perfectally round hole constructed by the birds which is located right
under a break in the tree. The hanging broken top almost forms a
protective roof for the nest. It is very easily observed from a path in
our woods. Today, I watch both of the pair feeding, almost one after the
other arriving with insects. I could hear the young inside. The female
was especially cautious entering the hole, doing an elaborate motion as
if she were testing for safety. The male was much more apt to just enter
the nest! They are continually bringing food for the young. Several
birders have taken pictures of them, including John Rowlett when he
visited us last week with his Warbler tour group. Two other additional
very interesting sightings have been a bear with 2 cubs and 2 very young
bobcat, not with their mother.
