[va-bird] Welcome Richard

Hi, All:
Just a brief addendum to the discussion about rudeness on the list, not only
to the lady wanting to find the owl but also to our new and clever friend
from Wisconsin (I KNEW there was a reason I love the midwest and great
plains--it's the PEOPLE)! As a relatively new subscriber, I too was rather
dismayed at the response to my inadvertent naming of the Golden-winged
Warbler as a "yellow-winged." We all make those types of errors on
occasion. A joking response which allows us all to laugh at ourselves is
welcome, but self-serving, "I-know-more-than-you-do" barbs are part of what
makes me hesitant to go on organized "birding" trips with "experts" or risk
a posting with a legitimate question as I did about the "mystery" bird (and
to which I received MANY genuine and helpful responses from great fellow
birders). Sometimes I wonder if our competitive natures make us more
interested in one-up-manship to the loss of the genuine JOY of observing the
incredible awe-inspiring beauty of the birds we love.
Welcome to Virginia, Richard, you have touched with great ingenuity on
another favorite of my husband and me--Gilbert and Sullivan, and I loved the
story about how you were inspired to start birding by the Grosbeaks.
