I also heard a Veery singing along my Northern
Virginia Breeding Bird Survey route at Difficult
Run Stream Valley Park off of Miller Heights Rd
in Oakton on June 5. Beautiful! It brought back
memories of my childhood in MA. I wondered if the
Veery might be trying to set up a nesting
territory (it is the second year I have found it
at this site on a BBS) or if it just a late
migrant. That same morning I had a singing
black-throated blue warbler, and a calling
broad-winged hawk who was being pestered by an
alarmed pileated woodpecker. Both the warbler and
hawk are unusual for Difficult Run in June.
All the best
