[va-bird] Huntley Meadows Birds, including Black Rail, June 15

VA Birders,

The Black Rail called for at least 3 hours this morning (from 7-10 am),
but we did not see it. It was calling from the middle of the area inside the
boardwalk loop at Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co. The recent rains have
raised water levels considerably, and thus reduced the areas where the rail
can walk. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PLAYING OF TAPES IS NOT PERMITTED AT HUNTLEY
MEADOWS.

Including birds that a few of us found on the way out and at the park's
feeders, our Northern Virginia Bird Club trip to Huntley Meadows this morning
tallied 50 species--not bad for mid-June. In addition to hearing the Black
Rail, highlights included a Mississippi Kite (which was perched on a snag on
the right side of the boardwalk at the beginning of the trip), a Glossy Ibis,
2 Hooded Mergansers, and a Barred Owl (possibly 2), which we heard calling
from the woods around the marsh.
