Tom Mizell and I birded the Smoke Hole area today from the entrance at Upper
Tract to Big Bend. Besides Indigo Buntings the most numerous species were N.
Parula and Red-eyed Vireo and about half dozen each of Yellow-billed Cuckoos
and Baltimore Orioles. Other species heard or saw were Scarlet Tanagers, Cliff
Swallows, Hummingbird, Wood Pewee, L. Waterthrush, Orchard Oriole, Kingfisher,
Broad-winged Hawk and Flickers at the nest. The bird of the day was a close up
look of a mature Bald Eagle perched on the opposite bank of the S. Branch River
as we were on our way out.
