To All,
Highlights of the Northern Virginia Bird Club's Highland County, VA,
weekend, held Friday, May 31-Sunday, June 2, are:
Ruffed Grouse (1 on Rt. 220, north of Monterey, on 6/2, which was on the
side of the road when we stopped but then walked out and stood in the road in
front of our car until we started to move forward, when it flew up the
embankment!)
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (1 on side road off Forest Road [F.R.] 55 on 6/1)
Least Flycatcher (several on side road off F.R. 55 on 6/1, and 1 in Blue
Grass area on 6/2)
Blue-headed Vireo (1 on F.R. 55 on 6/1)
Common Raven (several seen or heard all 3 days)
Horned Lark (2-3 in Blue Grass area on 5/31)
Cliff Swallows (several in Blue Grass area on 5/31)
Black-capped Chickadee (1 on F.R. 55 on 6/1)
Chestnut-sided Warbler (many in various locations all 3 days)
Mourning Warbler (1 or 2 on F.R. 55 on 6/1)
Savannah Sparrow (2-3 on Rt. 638 on 6/1)
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (1-2 on F.R. 55 on 6/1)
Indigo Bunting (many in various locations all 3 days)
Bobolink (many in various locations all 3 days)
Eastern Meadowlark (many in various locations all 3 days)
We had a total of at least 71 species for the weekend. Due to some
last-minute cancellations, we had only 4 people on the trip, which allowed us
all to bird in 1 car.
Note: The birds on F.R. 55 were actually in Bath County.
