Bob Klarquist and I co-led a Northern Virginia Bird Club walk at Belle
Haven park, marina, and Dyke Marsh this morning. Migrants have pretty
much moved on, so attention was directed to neo-tropical and resident
breeders.

Just when it seemed we would never see  the singing  Warbling Vireo in a
picnic area sycamore tree, we were rewarded with a great view of a
female going to and sitting in a nest and the male quickly coming into
view himself.  We had nice views of both Orchard and Baltimore Orioles,
Eastern Kingbirds, Yellow Warbler, White-eyed Vireo,  and a Northern
Parula. We also heard Marsh Wrens and both  Acadian and Willow
Flycatchers.

Just after we had counted 30  goslings and 3 adult Canadas feeding along
a grassy strip in the marina, the number was suddenly reduced to 29 when
a large dog, a retriever of some kind, raced down the road and picked
off the last fleeing young Canada. The dog had a trailing leash, but was
obviously not in the control of its owner. I spoke to the owner about
her violation of the leash law. She was upset, but it was a bit too late
for that. It's doubtful that the bird survived, but  I can't be sure.
