VA-Birders,
The Delmarva Ornithological Society (DOS), will hold its first major =20=
fund raising event, a bird-a-thon, from May 5 to May 13 in backyards, =20=
fields, forests and wetlands throughout Delaware. The DOS includes =20
over 250 members from 9 states, including Virginia. (The Delmarva =20
peninsula comprises the state of Delaware and portions of Maryland =20
and Virginia.) Through an alliance with organizations including the =20
Conservation Fund, America=92s foremost conservation non-profit =20
dedicated to the protection of wildlife habitat, 100% of the proceeds =20=
is slated to buy vital migratory shorebird habitat along the Delaware =20=
Bay that will benefit the Red Knot rufa subspecies.
Many Virginia birders and the VSO have been involved in efforts in =20
Virginia to support legislation in our state for a moratorium on =20
horseshoe crab harvesting to help prevent the extinction of the Red =20
Knot. I know there are many bird-a-thons these days and many other =20
worthy conservation causes, but saving the Red Knot is one close to =20
the hearts of many Virginia birders.
Two Virginia birders, Bill Young and I, will join two Delaware =20
birders, Sharon Lynn and Sandra Spence, to compete in this bird-a-=20
thon, hoping to make our contribution to this important conservation =20
cause. We will be counting bird species during a 24-hour period on =20
May 9/10. We would be most grateful for any pledges from Virginia =20
birders. Pledges amounts can be made per species, or any lump sum. =20
Just send me an email with your pledge and I'll be in touch with you =20
after the bird-a-thon with results. Thanks so much!
