[va-bird] Gunston Cove and Accotink Bay

We birded Gunston Cove and Accotink Bay from Ft. Belvoir this morning.  The=
 highlight was a Prairie Warbler on the Basin Trail in the Accotink Bay Wil=
dlife Refuge.  Prairie Warblers have been present in and around the clearin=
g at the south end of the trail since last Wednesday.  Also observed:=20

Osprey (many)
Bald eagle (many, mostly immature)
Lesser scaup (6)
American coot (5)
Double-crested cormorant (11)

The scaup, coots, and cormorants were avoiding speedboat traffic on the eas=
t side of Gunston Cove, south of the old pier near the fuel cell research f=
acility on Johnston Road, Ft. Belvoir.=20

Mute swan (1, at the north end of Accotink Bay)
Canada goose (and goslings)
Mallard (4)
Tree swallow
Barn swallow
Great blue heron (8)
Forster=E2=80=99s tern (1)
Eastern bluebird (2)
Mourning dove
Northern mockingbird
Blue jay
Brown thrasher
American crow
Fish crow
Common grackle
Red-winged blackbird
European starling
Northern cardinal
Song sparrow (5)
White-throated sparrow (1)

A large population of White-Throated Sparrows foraged in the woods along Jo=
hnston Road this past Wednesday.  Only one appeared today.=20

Red-bellied woodpecker
White-breasted nuthatch (1)
Carolina wren
Blue-gray gnatcatcher
Red-eyed vireo
White-eyed vireo
Northern parula
Common yellowthroat
Yellow-rumped warbler
Eastern kingbird
Orchard oriole
Baltimore oriole

The orioles were near and south of the archery range on Ft. Belvoir.

Lesser yellowlegs (2)
Greater yellowlegs (1)
Wilson=E2=80=99s snipe (1)
Spotted sandpiper (1)

The shorebirds were best observed from the Basin Overlook spur to the
Basin Trail.  Two Osprey perched in a tree about 30 feet above us there.

Tufted titmouse
