This morning Gene Burreson and I conducted the first of our three volunteer
tidal marsh breeding bird surveys in Mathews County (a project of the VA
Bird Conservation Initiative).
We visited some points along the upper portions of Garden Creek and the
road leading to Bethel Beach. Notable sightings from the morning were:
Clapper Rails - more or less everywhere in the marshes
Seaside Sparrows - at least 5 along the road to Bethel Beach
Sharp-tailed Sparrows - along the road to Bethel Beach; sounded like a
ringer for Nelson's, but I guess they'd be unexpected - species ID will
have to wait till another day (at least 2 individuals)
Spotted Sandpipers - many
Greater Yellowlegs - 1 at Bethel Beach
Willets - many
Great Black-backed Gull - 1 fly-by at Bethel Beach
When I got home to Gloucester at around 8:30 am, the male Rose-breasted
Grosbeak was at the feeder (third sighting; he's been around for about a
week now), and around the yard were:
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 1
Gray Catbird 1
Northern Parula 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler 1
Black-throated Green Warbler 1
Ovenbird 1
Hooded Warbler 1
