We started out to check our bluebird trail today and came upon a small flock
of about 10-12 Bobolinks singing and flying from a grass-blade perch to the
fence. Also saw and heard a Grasshopper Sparrow, a Raven, a Horned Lark, a
Savannah Sparrow and at least 2 American Pipits. I was happy to see more
Meadow Larks than usual too. (This location is the farm on Kratzer Road in
Rockingham County across from the R. R. Donnelly Plant.) Earlier on the trail
I
saw a Pileated Woodpecker, a large flock of Cedar Waxwings and a Sharp-shined
Hawk flying with a bird in its talons. The rain came, so we stopped
birding--but who would have thought to get 30 birds with the unusual ones
mentioned
in a one hour period on a cloudy, cool afternoon?
