Following my morning visit to the Occoquan NWR bird banding station, I
took the nod from Ben Jessup finally and visited White Oaks Park around
1pm today(south of Alexandria between Rt. 1 and GW Parkway).
What a great little place! If you're looking for Monticello-like
atomosphere, minus the "migration-people-crowds" (I was all alone), this
is a great place for sure. I only stayed about 45 min., but still heard
and saw a good many species (and here are the highlights):
Heard only:
- black and white warbler
- rose breasted grossbeak
- black throated yellow warblers
Seen:
- towhees
- wood thrush
- veery
- swainson's thrush (a lifer for me)
- black throated blue warblers
- worm eating worblers (a pair - lifers for me)
I'm sure a more experienced birder would find even more, and a beginner
birder would find it to be a great, relaxing place to bird.
One note of caution, when I arrived back at my car, the police were there
investing a suspicous car - mine. Apparently the neighbors aren't used to
birders parking in front of their houses for the park. No harm was done
though. :)
Happy birding!
