Birders,
Yesterday morning, Jim Nix and I birded Montpelier Plantation (James Madison Estate), Orange County.

Highlight was three Blue-winged Warblers singing a song with which we were unfamiliar.

N. Parula (5), Ovenbird (6), Black-throated Green (2), Black- throated Blue (2), Common Yellow-throat (1), Yellow-rump (15), Louisiana Waterthrush (3), Black and White (1), Cerulian (2),, Yellow (1) for a total of 11 warbler species. Kentucky Warbler was not singing at its usual haunt but it was getting toward the quite time of day.

100's of Cedar Waxwings ((200+)
Scarlet Tanager (5)
Baltimore Oriole (3)
Orchard Oriole (2)
Blue Grosbeak (1)
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (3)
Indigo Bunting (4)
Grasshopper Sparrow (10)
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (4)
Brown Thrasher (7)
Eastern Pewee (2)
Eastern Phoebe (1)
Chimney Swift (11)
Solitary Sandpiper (1)
Yellow-billed Cuckoo (1)

Also, Carolina Chickadees, Titmice, E. Towhees, Wood Thrushes, Mockingbirds, Barn Swallows, Starlings, Meadowlarks and others for a total of 52 species.

A LEAST FLYCATCHER was singing in our yard but disappeared into the woods before we could see it.

Observed a COYOTE from the yard a few days ago.

For the second year Bumblebees are usurping the nests of Carolina Chickadees. Last year the bees formed a gelatinous mass on top of the Chickadee eggs and the carcass of a chickadee was found lying on top of the mass. Needless to say, we are less than pleased and think we may turn some Bumblebees into Hummel figures.

Signing off until we return from birding the German Alps!

Happy birding,

George Harris Orange County
