Laura Weidner asked me to post the following info. on the status of the nesting
Bald Eagles at the Dulles Greenway Wetlands Mitigation Project (DGWMP).
Sat. afternoon prior to LWC's amphibian monitoring workshop at the Banshee
Reeks NP Laura stopped by the DGWMP. When she put her scope on the eagle nest
on the southern side of the Wetlands & immed. above Goose Creek & clearly
visible from Oatlands Mill Rd (about six miles south of Leesburg & a 1/2 mile
off RT. 15) she was pretty sure she saw three eaglets but wasn't positive. She
took photos. She returned yesterday & took more photos and writes:
"I arrived to the wetlands around 11am. I could clearly see THREE eaglets
moving around the nest. They all seem to be about the same size- if there is a
runt I could not pick it out! There were no adults around at first. Then at
11:15 two adults flew in. ... The one adult fed the eaglets while the other
kept watch over the family! Then w/in 10 minutes they both flew off towards
the water in the wetlands. One perched in the big dead tree on the island. A
few minutes later it dropped down came up w/ something and flew back to the
nest!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I left it was feeding the young."
If anyone wants to see the photos pls let me know & I can email them to you.
