Birders,
Yesterday, Rosemarie and I birded on the Staunton River Trail,
Shenandoah National Park, Madison County.
About a mile along the trail at the point where you must walk between
gigantic rocks, a Kentucky Warbler was on territory, singing and
posing near the trail. Birds were unusually quite but since this was
our target bird, we were happy as larks.
Other birds included Hooded Warbler, Ovenbirds, N. Parula, Louisiana
Waterthrushes, Wood Thrush, Kingfishers, Pileated and Downy
Woodpeckers, Eastern Kingbird, Orchard Oriole, Warbling and Blue-
headed Vireos ........ about 40 species total were seen.
Sunday, we birded at MONTPELIER PLANTATION (James Madison estate)
Orange County. Yellow-rumped Warblers were everywhere, at least 200
were observed. Nice Wood Thrush serenade in the old growth forest
and Baltimore Orioles were at the cemetery. Scarlet Tanagers, Hooded
Warblers, N. Paruala, Ovenbirds, Black-throated Green Warblers,
Spotted Sandpiper, Chimney Swifts, Savannah Sparrows, Meadowlarks, as
well as, the usual array of birds.
Have a happy day!
George Harris
Orange County
