Between the hours of 5 and 6pm today I stood in my yard in wonder at
the sheer number of birds. There were the 50 or so Chipping Sparrows,
never have I seen them in such numbers. 15 at a time on the platform
feeder as many on the ground and the trees still full of them! Still
lots of White-throated Sparrows around. All the usual suspects were
also around. A lone Baltimore Oriole made an appearance high in a
tree. But the real treat was the warblers. At least 10 Yellow-Rumpeds,
2 American Redstarts, and a Blackpoll (it is getting late in the
season isn't it?). There were some others that I could not identify
and the air was full of not-so-familiar songs and calls.
The Oriole, Redstart and Blackpoll are all new yard birds. Final tally
25 species in about 50 minutes of standing still in my yard. Spring
don't leave us yet! The yard list is currently at 58 species.
You can be sure I will be prowling about at sunrise tomorrow!
