Good birds on Tuesday sucked 1.5 hours out of another morning on Tuesday. I
had 52 species. Highlights
30 migrating jays
5 RE vireos
1 warbling vireo (my first ever in the park, closing out the vireos there)
2 veery
3 hermit
3 wood
1 thrasher (and the other mimids)
2 RC kinglet
14 sp. warblers (5 rumps, 4 ovenbird, 2 each blackpoll (they?re back . . .),
B&W, and yellowthroat, and one each parula, yellow, chestnut-sided (first of
the year), BTB, BTG, prairie, wormy, No. H20thrush, and hooded)
2 swamp sparrow
1 RB grosbeak
1 Balt. Oriole

Mark Moran was there before me and also had my predicted tanager, as well as
blue-headed vireo and Swainson?s thrush. Not bad for 10 acres.

Inspired, I decided to list the birds on my 12-mile bike ride to work
(remember work?) along the Mt. Vernon bike path. I did not stop, except to
confirm that the grebe under the 14th Street Bridge was a pied-billed, not a
horned. I added 6 other waterbirds to my day list, plus swift, kingbird,
rough-winged and barn swallows, both crows, starling, and red-winged BB,
getting my total for the day up to 67 species.

Nothing to do but a ?quick? 1.5-hour lunch-time walk on the mall. Additions
there were 2 spotted sandpipers and tree and bank swallow (plus the other
two) at Constitution Gardens, 2 palm warblers, cowbird, 2 gorgeous singing
adult WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, 1 late JUNCO (I?ve never had one in May
before), and 2 orchard orioles. In all 44 species on the Mall (including at
least 14 hermit thrushes, plus wood and veery, 40 plus rumps and a
blackpoll), and 75 species for the day. Not bad for a working day. Kind
of.
