[va-bird] Huntley Sunday and White Oaks this morning

Jim Mathews and I foolishly braved the rain Sunday morning on the back side
of Huntley and were paid by 62 species. Once the rain stopped we had nice
numbers of migrants. Highlights:
4 raptor sp. (osprey, tail, shoulder, and 2 coopers, one of which made a
pass at a sparrow flock by a brush pile)
2 loon
2 YB cuckoo
1 barred owl
3 flycatcher sp. (great crested, phoebe, empid. (presumably Acadian, but not
singing))
patriotic vireos (including at least 10 red, which are finally back in
numbers)
21+ thrushstravaganza (11 hermit, 6 veery, 4 wood thrush ? at least one of
each species singing)
12 + catbird (also finally back in numbers)
2 thrashers
20 gnatcatchers
10 RC kinglets (they?re really late leaving this year)
12 warbler sp. (3 blue-wing (there seem to be a lot this year), 20 each rump
and throat, 14 ovenbird, 8 B&W, 2 each wormy and redstart, 1 each parula,
BTG, pine, No. H2Othrush, hooded)
130 white-throats (most in a mixed flock with swamps in the Woodcock Meadow)
30 swamp
1 song
10 towhee
4 scarlet tanager
1 bunting (molting and singing)
This morning at White Oaks was also great, with a total of 46 species in 1.5
hours. I sympathize with Chris French ? going to work was very hard, even
at the late hour I got in. Highlights:
Flock of Seagulls (laughing)
Great-crested (1st for the park this year)
5 RE vireos
12+ thrushstravaganza (7 hermit, 3 veery, 2 wood)
2 RC kinglets
8 warbler sp. (15 rumps, 5 ovenbird, 1 or 2 each of BTB, BTG, B&W, redstart,
No. H20thrush, yellowthroat)
Tomorrow, I predict the first tanager of the year.
