The Roanoke Valley Bird Club had a field trip on Mill Mountain, in the City
of Roanoke, this morning on a windy, cooler than normal morning. Of course the
most sought birds are probably the migrating warblers, and while not a steller
morning it was adequate, with 9 species found. Other birds that I felt were of
note were RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, a pair traveling together, BLUE-HEADED VIREO,
at one point 4 in view at the same time, and BROAD-WINGED HAWKS (3), streaming
through one by one overhead. Interesting in their absence were thrushes (maybe
a bit early, as Wood Thrush was the only one heard or seen), Flycatchers, and
Cuckoos. By my count we had 43 species, but I may have overlooked something.
