Despite early rain I was able to break the century mark with 117 species
between 6am and 12:30. I started at Cockpit Pt. Rd. in Dumfries, and worked my
way up Rt. 1 to Leesylvania State Park, Metz Wetlands, and Occoquan NWR. Part
of the way I joined forces with Kurt Gaskill, Jay Keller, and Kim Peacock. I
had many first-of-the year's today. Highlights were all 6 swallow species at
Leesylvania, with 1 bank and 1 cliff over the ruins; rose-breasted and blue
grosbeaks, both orioles, both tanagers, yellow-billed cuckoo, acadian
flycatcher, common loon and ruddy duck. I had 18 warbler species, including
blackburnian, chestnut sided, black-throated blue, hooded, magnolia, and
yellow-breasted chat. There were good hawk numbers, with broad-winged,
red-tailed, red-shouldered, Cooper's, sharp-shinned, and kestrel. All and all
an eventful morning.
