Susan Stanton asked me to post this on VA-Birds.

The Lynchburg Bird Club would like to express our thanks to all of the
attendees at the 75th Anniversary Meeting of the Virginia Society of
Ornithology held this past weekend, April 30 to May 2, in Lynchburg. Over
140 individuals participated in the celebration enjoying a diversity of
field trips, vendors, and scientific paper presentations. Our scheduled
banquet speaker, Ian Sinclair from South Africa, was ill and unable to
attend. We are very grateful to Dick Peake, who graciously filled in at the
last minute to be our presenter at the banquet dinner. Dick showed
wonderful photos of birds of South Africa.

In spite of threatening weather throughout the weekend, the field trips
resulted in an impressive total of 125 species. Here are some of the
highlights: The warblers were present even through the fog on "Warbler
Road." Great views were had of CERULEAN, BLACK-THROATED BLUE,
BLACK-THROATED GREEN, KENTUCKY, HOODED, and WORM-EATING. Heard were CANADA
and BAY-BREASTED among others. Several groups had a total of 16 warblers and
24 species were counted for the event. At Fleming Mountain birds that had
just arrived included YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, BLUE-WINGED
WARBLER, and BLUE GROSBEAK. Additionally, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER, SWAINSON'S
THRUSH, and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER were seen. One BANK SWALLOW was seen at
the James River Overlook along with the other four expected swallows. The
group that went to Claytor Nature Study Center had NORTHERN BOBWHITE,
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, and BOBOLINK. Participants on the
Appomattox trip got excellent views of a BROAD-WINGED HAWK and SUMMER
TANAGER. Streaking quickly past was a possible MERLIN.

Everyone enjoyed the birds as well as an entertaining event.

A complete species list will follow soon.
