All,
As previously announced, the Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory (CVWO) is
sponsoring a bird count in lower Northampton County, Eastern Shore, on May 15,
Migratory Bird Day. The idea is to replicate, as much as possible, the CBC that
is held in the same area, but during the peak of spring migration. This is the
inaugual effort in what we hope will be another long running contribution to
the understanding of bird use of this critical area.
Volunteer numbers so far are below what we need to do area justice. Please
consider spending part or all of the day (May 15 is Saturday after next) with
us counting birds and enjoying the beauty of spring on the lower shore. Combine
it with a trip to Chincoteague or other area hot spots if you want. It will be
great if you can be with us from dark to dark that day, but if you can only
bird that morning or that afternoon, we'll be just as pleased with that.
Experts are welcome but birders of all levels, such as myself, are highly
encouraged to participate. This is citizen science and everyone can contribute.
It's a busy time of year and there are other events taking place in the state
and region that have some of our best birders otherwise bespoke (that's you,
Kurt and Bob) so we need everyone's help if we're to pull this off.
Prime territories are still available and I'll bend over backwards to assign
you to the area you prefer. Just drop me an email or call 757 373-0076 and let
me know that you'll be able to help on May 15.
Thanks,
Tom Saunders
