I visited Leesylvania State Park this morning and walked the Powell's Creek
trail. An infestation of some kind of inch worm is doing a lot of damage to
leaves of the large trees (mostly oaks), but is also attracting a lot of birds
to the tree tops. Large flocks of cedar waxwings and red-winged blackbirds
were having a feeding frenzy. Mixed in were many other birds as well,
including good numbers of scarlet tanagers, rose-breasted grosbeaks, red-eyed
vireos, and yellow-rumped warblers. Other warblers heard from overhead were
black-throated green, redstart, black-throated blue, parula, black and white,
and blue-winged. Other warblers heard at lower levels include worm-eating,
ovenbird, Louisiana waterthrush, and prothonotary. There were also good
numbers of wood thrush (no other thrushes) and acadian flycatcher along the
trail. Near the picnic area were both orioles, blue grosbeak, and indigo
bunting.
