We don't really differ in this opinion ALL that much. Observation is
one of the backbones of birding. We all know this to be fact. And the
reporting of a Brown Thrasher eating a Cicada nymph, with out a doubt,
falls into this category.
But knowing that you were eating a cheese sandwich and standing on
one leg at the time doesn't really add much to that observation.

Now don't get me wrong- adding a personal touch to a post is more
than welcomed in my eyes. It can enhance the observations being shared.
But it can get a bit out of hand and then a worthy observation ends up
getting buried.
As you've mentioned, there are sites and listservs (such as your own)
that were specifically set up to provide an atmosphere that is more
focused on general discussion, and on a multitude of subjects, ranging
from beetles to birds- it's all there. I am not only subscribed to
VA-Bird... and I enjoy the fact that these other forums exist. Not only
do I enjoy the fact that they exist, I take advantage of it. When there
are topics of discussion that I would like to explore further, but feel
they are innapropriate for an informative Listserv such as VA-Bird,
that's where I go.

This part deals nothing with the Listserv but I figured I would
address it anyways.

As far as I can tell, the only issue on which we differ is the
competitive side of birding- and that makes up a pretty small fraction
of the posts recieved to the List.
A bit of friendly, good-natured competition never hurt anyone. It
makes you a better birder.
Whether it's a Big Day, a Big May, a Big Year or a Big Sit...It
forces you to sharpen your skills as a birder. You need to be on top of
WHERE to go, WHEN to go and for WHAT. As long as you're the honest
type, all it requires is pushing your senses to the limit, and is as
benign as a game of chess...
