Greetings,
Despite feeling under the weather and getting a late start, I just had to get
out, knowing that migration was underway. Glad I did, because instead of
seeing a C. Yellowthroat pop up in the field, a SEDGE WREN appeared. I
thought I was hearing the sharp rattle of a C. Yellowthroat, so I really
didn't pay much attention. They were all over that field, so I didn't have to
actually see another one, but for some reason I did look at it. NOT a
Yellowthroat! In the brief time the bird appeared, I noticed the smaller size
(compared to Marsh and Carolina), buffy flanks and undertail coverts,
streaked back, barring on the wings, and the nondescript supercillium
(compared to the other wrens). In Sibley's book, he compares the staccato
rattle of the C. Yellowthroat to the Sedge Wren..page 452.
Hard to believe that I didn't hear any Carolina Wrens, but had a Sedge!
