[va-bird] Red-breasted Nuthatch - Lynchburg

Listening from my deck this morning to find what was around I noted that at
least 2-3 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks were still around after my wife and girls
saw three males together at the feeder yesterday and two females at another
time. A few Scarlet Tanagers, both male and female, were new additions to
the year yard list. Not much in the way of warblers while I was out, but
momentarily I thought I heard a Red-breasted Nuthatch call. I had about
dismissed it as an unusual Blue Jay sound when a small nuthatch shape flew
overhead out of our large tulip tree and landed in one of our white oaks,
giving a nice view and confirming, with more calling to boot, that it was a
Red-breasted. Not the latest date in our area by any means, but given that
this is a noninvasion year and that they have been very sparsely reported in
the state this winter, I considered it the best yard bird in a while. I'll
have to check, but it may be a new yard bird.
