Potomac Valley Audubon Society has a nature center, Yankauer Preserve, 
nearby, about 5 miles away.  Just follow the "Wildlife Viewing Area" signs 
on Shepherd Grade Road, then on Scrabble Road.  It has a trail that takes 
you through a delightful forest and down close to the Potomac River.  Also, 
there are a couple of trails at the National Conservation Training Center, 
about 3 miles from the Barvarian Inn, also on Shepherd Grade Road, but you 
don't make any turns to get there.  You might need to call NCTC to see if 
they'll let you in.  They have a bird list for the area.

Of course, just about anywhere on the C & O Towpath is pretty good birding too.
