[va-bird] Upland Sandpiper, Fauquier 7 May 2002

All...

I made two visits today to the spot in Remington where I had the Upland
Sandpiper on 6 May. The first was at eight-thirty this morning until about
nine, and the second was at seven-thirty this evening until about eight. It
was cloudy at both stops. The morning visit did not produce the bird. In
the evening the bird was virtually in the same spot that I had it on Monday.
Last May when the bird was around it was never easy to find. I probably
found it on about twenty-five percent of my visits. Middle of warm, sunny
days was always nonproductive. Mornings were usually best.

The plowed field that the bird is being seen in now has rows of a two inch
high crop growing out of it. It looks suspiciously like corn, which means in
a few weeks if the bird still visits that field, it will be nearly impossible
to find it. Hopefully at that point it will switch back to the short grass.

If anyone heads out to see it, please send me a note regarding your success
or lack of it. Thanks.

Cheers...

Todd
