VA BIRDers,
As a warm-up for next Saturday, Migratory Bird Day, I put together a list of
species reported in the Northern Virginia area for Saturday, May 4, 2002 -
thanks go to all who posted their sightings on the web or spoke with me, from
which the list was created. I know that the list is, by far, not complete,
but it does give a reasonably nice description of the species present in our
area. The list reports that, at this time, 155 species were observed in the
No. Virginia area Saturday (Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and
Fauquier Counties and included cities). There are many species missing that
some people may have noted last Saturday - if so, please drop me a line. Let
me briefly summarize the list as I have it at this time.
In the waterfowl area of loons, swans, geese and ducks, 13 species were noted
with Am. Wigeon being the most interesting.
Only 5 herons were noted but at least Yellow-crowned Night-Heron was seen.
Of the vultures and hawks, 11 species were noted of which Merlin was the most
interesting.
Of the shorebirds, 11 species were noted and Black-bellied Plover and Dunlin
were of great interest.
In the larid department, 7 species were noted including an adult Lesser
Black-backed Gull.
For flycatchers, 5 species were observed and the Least Flycatcher was of
great interest.
For vireos and warblers, 5 and 29 species were noted. An early Wilson's was
reported and a Brewster's Warbler type (not counted in the total) was also
reported.
All the swallow species were observed, but only one bird was a Cliff.
Seven species of sparrow were reported.
Species that were not reported last Saturday but may have been present in the
area were: Least Bittern, Snowy Egret, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Glossy
Ibis, Mute Swan, American Black Duck, Cooper's Hawk, Peregrine Falcon (near
the RR bridge from DC to Arlington), No. Bobwhite, Ring-necked Pheasant,
Sora, Virginia Rail, King Rail (any rail?), Laughing Gull, Barn Owl, E.
Screech Owl, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, E. Wood Pewee, Horned Lark, Loggerhead
Shrike, Common Raven, Marsh Wren, Hermit Thrush, American Pipit,
Golden-winged Warbler, Tennesse Warbler, Cape May Warbler, Bay-breasted
Warbler, Vesper Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Lincoln's Sparrow, White-crowned
Sparrow, Rusty Blackbird, Purple Finch, and Pine Siskin. If anyone noted any
of these birds on Saturday (or other species that you thought unusual),
please drop me a line. Thanks!
For those who desire a complete list of species noted on May 4th, please
write.
And for those of you birding next Saturday, Migratory Bird Day, please post
your species lists and report your results! Thanks!
Wishing You All Good Birds - Kurt Gaskill
