VA BIRDers,

After Marc and I parted, I played a little hooky and hung out near a big
grassy field called Davidson Airfield at Ft Belvoir, doing paperwork and half
dozing. I was trying to be consistent with our day's philosophy, "don't
travel far to bird". Nothing much to write home about for this spot, at
least today that is. Besides the abundant Cliff Swallows, Chimney Swifts,
Starlings and Red-winged Blackbirds there was a few E. Meadowlarks and a
calling Red-shouldered Hawk. So, I went back to Dyke Marsh and afterwards,
visited Huntley Meadows as the nice spring shower rained down upon me.

I filled in a few holes to the day's totals before calling it quits - Ben
Jessup and Bart Hutchinson will likely fill in more of the Huntley holes as
they continued the day there as I packed it in. I managed to fill about 7
holes and these were:

At Hunting Creek and the mudflats:
Tundra Swan - I got a close look at a classic adult bill
Dunlin - 4 of the prettiest breeding plumaged birds you could ask for
Least Sandpiper - 9 little imps hurridly probing the mudflats for tasty
morsels
plus a few Greater Yellowlegs, Solitary and Spotteds

At Huntley Meadows
American Bittern - one relocated from a spot on the west side to (its
favorite?) spot a little south of the platform
Green Heron - at least 5, curious how we missed these during our earlier
activities
Hooded Merganser - mom with 9 merganserlettes. Very nice.

At home:
Hairy Woodpecker, a surprising near miss!

In terms of the day's misses, I find it interesting that we could not locate
at least one Eastern Pewee. Ugh!

Hoping that you all catch the wave!

Kurt Gaskill
