[va-bird] Warblers @ Thompson WMA, Fauquier Co.

William Leigh and I spent most of the day birding Thompson WMA. At Thompson
only, we totaled 18 species of Warblers as well as the
expected 5 species of Vireos.
At the lake dam, we first heard, then saw, a bird which may be the same one
Kurt mentioned yesterday. It was singing a typical
Golden-winged song; eventually, when we found it, it appeared more like a
Blue-winged, but had a strong, black eye stripe,
very-yellow body, but without any noticable throat patch. Whether the same bird
as Kurt's or not, it was apparently a hybrid - more
likely Brewster's type, like Kurt said. Linda Millington's group had also
reported hearing a similar song in the same area, so I
suppose it may have been the same bird.
Most unexpected was the Northern Waterthrush in the creek north of the lower
parking lot. Expected, but not found there, was a
Louisiana WT. Typical birding - find a few, miss a few.
Combined warbler species at upper and lower portions :
Blue-winged
Nashville
N. Parula
Yellow
Magnolia
Black-throated Blue
Yellow-rumped
Black-throated Green
Cerulean
Black-and-White
A. Redstart
Worm-eating
Ovenbird
N. Waterthrush
Kentucky
C. Yellowthroat
Hooded
YB Chat
After that initial tease, we were shooting for a 20 warbler day, but we missed
by 1
(congrats to Kurt and Mark for 25!). We finally found a Louisiana WT on the way
home, and checked some spots for Prothonotary and
Chestnut-sided, but the rain beat us out. But 19 ain't too bad!
