[va-bird] Common Loon at Kingstowne Lake, Alexandria

This afternoon about 4:30 we were surprised by a lone loon swiming and
diving in the man-made lake at the corner of Van Dorn Street and
Kingstown Parkway. No other waterfowl were present on the water (an
"Aflack" duck was on the shore, panhandling).

As we walked around the lake on the asphalt trail, a green heron
suddenly flushed from the mini-marsh at one end. Not bad birds for such
a place.

Oh, and on the path was the teeniest baby snapping turtle which
we returned to the lake so he could grow into a gross, duckling eater,
which reminds me: there was also a mana and "nanny" mallard with several
ducklings on the shore, and as we approached, the mom and kiddos took off
into the high grass whilst "Nanny" (the other female) proceeded to walk
on ahead and get our attention off of the youngsters. Has anyone ever
heard of anything like this?
