VA Birders, I received a call this afternoon from the Acting Park Manager
atFort C.F. Smith Park, Arlington Co. (he is also a birder/naturalist), that
he had just seen a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER flying away from the suet feeder
outside his office window. I called Joanna Taylor, and we met at the park
about 4:00 pm. Happily, the woodpecker returned to the area near the feeders
a short time later, and we got good looks at at. While waiting for the
woodpecker, we found our first BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS of the year in a
nearbytree. A little later, we counted 4 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS
flying around near the Bird Stream (which has not yet been turned on for the
year). Good birding, Val Kitchens Arlington, VA
